The Good and the Bad

Ruthie is asleep in a baby sling, wrapped tightly next to my chest. It's how she sleeps best.

My sister-in-law, Megan, told me early on, "People argue all the time about what kind of parenting style should be used. But really, it's not up to you as a parent. The kid decides what kind of parenting style you use."

She's right.

Ever since she was born Ruthie has proved to be a highly touch-oriented baby. She sleeps better lying next to me. She's more contented when sitting in my lap. She's quick to fuss if left alone.

I know this season won't last forever. I know that soon she'll grow up and I'll miss the times when she needed me in the middle of the night.

At 4 AM this morning, unable to fall back asleep after Ruth's 3:30 feeding, I sat gazing at her as she rocked in the baby swing. "I love you very much," I said, "I'm right here, and I love you very much."
